An Upside-down Skyscraper?!

9 Nov

What do you do when you are restricted from building a skyscraper?  Duh, build an EARTHSCRAPER of course!  This is something you have to see to believe…

Talk about flipping architecture upside-down…and yeah, pun intended!

Like any normal person, my initial reaction was one of disbelief and “are you serious?” as I watched the video.  I have to admit, I’m skeptical about some things:

  • I feel like the earth’s pressure is much higher than wind pressure!  Especially at 65 stories below ground…
  • Daylight?  Yeahhhh, not going to happen very well below, probably, the 20th floor.  However, that could possibly improve with further design thought.
  • In all honesty, I think it would be hard not to feel like you’re working in a dungeon.
  • Exiting the building…what if the elevators break down and I have to use the stairs?  I would much rather climb DOWN 65 flights of stairs at the end of the day (since gravity would help me after a tiring day of work) than climb UP 65 stories (you would definitely be in shape though!)

However, while I’m skeptical about a few things, I absolutely admire one thing:  CHALLENGING OUR THOUGHT.  It’s one thing to take a skyscraper and twist it, mold it, or build it a mile high (which all push the envelope of certain building components), but it’s another thing to completely rethink the perception of the status quo.   At that point, everything comes into play…structure, ventilation, power, circulation, light, function, etc…and it takes great energy (and, let’s admit it, some guts) to propose something that thinks completely out of the box.

My conclusion:  this is some pretty crazy stuff!!!  And I have to admit, it is kinda growing on me…what do you think?!
