Developers! Developers! Developers!

How often can you look at the initial design and then redesign of a project and say “The developers sure did a good job with the redesign”?

The redesigned Hudson Yards

That is exactly what happened with the Hudson Yards project. After the initial design was revealed the developer realized that he wanted something less blah (for lack of a better word).

Original plan for Hudson Yards

The new design is not about to be the greatest building in the city but it has taken a nice improvement from the old design which looks just way too much like a standard glass box. So although developers are often the thorn in the side of architects don’t forget that at times they can be on your side.

This is a beautiful redesign! What I like most about is that it's not something crazy, spectacular, or off the wall…it took the simple, "blah" design and turned it into something still simple but also poetic and playful. What I like about the developer side of the story is that it shows that there isn't one dominant figure in a project…everyone has something to contribute!
