Nature by Numbers

22 Nov

This is an amazing animation I came across in the Woot forums the other day. It starts off a little slow but gets to some really amazing graphics near the end.

Nature by Numbers from Cristóbal Vila on Vimeo.

This video is a great example of how simple things can be made quite beautiful. Who knew math could be so pretty? It is a great example of how to take a simple concept and turn it into a beautiful graphic and I would hope that everyone could at least aspire to make things that are as simple yet beautiful as this.

(spoilers follow) I personally really enjoyed the portion starting around 1:40 with the sunflower. I had never really looked at a sunflower before, I had seen them but never gave them the time of day. It really is amazing that pattern in the center of a sunflower and that I had never taken a second look at it before now.

(update)

The quote of the day fits very well:

“Art is science made clear.” – Jean Cocteau

Yes this video is about math but the idea that complex ideas can be easily shown in a few minute video is what amazed me about this video in the first place.

Amazing video/animation!!! Nature is so beautiful.

I couldn’t agree more about how beautiful simplicity can be. It’s amazing that we view nature sometimes as so complex, but the marriage of nature with science and art can make the world so much more understandable.

“Art is science made clear” is a great quote, and this video also spurred another quote to live by:

“Making the simple complex is commonplace; Making the complex simply, awesomely simple, that’s creativity.” – Charles Mingus
