Porsche Designed Condo: Rethinking the Highrise

23 Nov

When you think about cities, you think the need to limit your number of cars for several reasons…lack of parking, expensive gas, tons of traffic, pollution, etc.

But a condo developer in Miami is starting a project that will at least take care of the lack of parking…while giving you your own personal valet!

Inventive Thinking…Constructing Wind Turbines with a Pick Up?!

23 Nov

When talking about innovation, you don’t necessarily need tons of money, big equipment, or a ton of fan support to get something done.  Sometimes all you need is a little invention.  With fuel prices between $6 and $7 per gallon in the remote locations of Alaska, heat and electricity costs are sky-high.  With that in mind, one town decided that windpower would be a fantastic solution.  There’s just one problem…how can you get a crane to a remote rural town without sending construction costs through the roof?

Easy…use a Ford F-150 pick up truck!

“The tribal leaders of the small village of Perryville on the Alaska Peninsula in a far corner of Southwest Alaska believe the wind has saved them $66,000 to date. The wind in Perryville does not blow particularly hard, but it comes steady off the Gulf of Alaska to spin 10 Skystream 3.7 wind turbines.

Villagers hoisted them into the air in November of 2008 using a winch mounted on a Ford F-250 pickup truck. Then they wired them into the grid connecting the village’s power to three, existing diesel turbines. The entire project cost $150,000″

You know what they say…”Necessity is the mother of invention.”

Hello Low Line

22 Nov

Check this out:

High Line meets Low Line, underground New York getting a makeover into a rich green paradise, only thing is that its actual underground in an abandoned Trolley Station closed in 1948…I really hope the MTA approves this, because this could revamp the entire way people view spaces below grade and instead of always building towards the skies and figuring out who can build the next tallest skyscraper that wont make any profit because no one can afford to rent the space…I can see it now, underground cities coming back alive, totally something out of a comic book, I LOVE IT!

This is an amazing animation I came across in the Woot forums the other day. It starts off a little slow but gets to some really amazing graphics near the end.

Where Good Ideas Come From

16 Nov

People often credit their ideas to individual “Eureka!” moments. But Steven Johnson shows how history tells a different story. His fascinating tour takes us from the “liquid networks” of London’s coffee houses to Charles Darwin’s long, slow hunch to today’s high-velocity web.

What would you want someone to say about YOUR architecture…and how it changed their life…?

7 Nov

During an unfortunate Steelers loss during the Steelers-Ravens game November 6th, I saw this GE commercial:

I was really moved by the fact that behind every machine in healthcare that changes peoples lives, there are modest, hardworking people designing, building, and innovating with little to no recognition, thanks, or knowledge of how people personally feel about their products…and how they change their lives.  They just work hard to continually improve the products and ultimately improve lives of millions of people…

WHAT IF architecture was the same way?
